Deleting Rig - Maya Crash

Post by Anides » Sat Oct 08, 2011 2:49 am

Hello,

If I attempt to delete a rigged vehicle from a Maya 2009 scene Maya crashes every time without exception. I can even open a fresh scene and "import" the rig, (because I also cant reference the file as outlined in the "known issues"), then immediately attempt to delete exactly what I imported,Maya crashes. This simply has to be some kind of bug.

Moreover, without the ability to reference a file or delete a rig from a scene with the intention of re-parenting a new rig to an existing SSC, then the swapping out of rigs seems to be completely impossible.

With vehicles in the automotive industry changing yearly, the ability to swap out rigs is quite important. Without that ability I'm left with little choice but too either re-animate everything every time a vehicle changes or export the SSC and bring that into a fresh scene and parent the new rig too it. The issue with the latter strategy seems to be that the imported SCC, while functioning properly, doesn't show up in the "record" window. Therefore, the imported SSC cannot be edited in the new scene.

If anyone has any insight as to why Maya crashes with the deletion or workflow tips to easily swap rigs with the intention of re-parenting those rigs to an existing SSC I'd be excited to learn about it.

thanks

Hi Anides,

Do you delete the rig by deleting the objects in the scene, or by deleting the 4-Wheeler in the CDS main window? Both of them should be fine, but if you encounter an error using one of them, please try the other approach and let me know if it makes any different.

The reference issue is a pain, i know, but with the current design of CDS there is little we can do at the moment. Try keep the actual 4-wheeler instance available in the scene and only remove/replace the high-poly model on top of it.

Micael,

Thanks for the response. Ive tried it both ways and both produce a crash. Maybe Ive messed something up along the way, I'm unsure. Ill try a full re-rig and see if it still crashes.

I do understand your comments about the swapping of high poly geo, but that's still very inefficient. I would have to re-rig every car to make the geometry updates, right? Im currently working on a minute or two long animation with many multiple shots done in separate files. I would need to update geo and re-rig the car something like 30-40 times.

If you have more tips, tricks, or advice Id like to hear about it.

Your product is really fantastic though, just wish I could reference.

Thanks
